Nearly 500 Guyanese businesses register for local content opportunities in first half of 2026
– US$466.2M spent on goods, services in areas prioritised for Guyanese participation
More Guyanese entrepreneurs are positioning themselves to participate in the country’s expanding oil and gas industry, with approximately 500 Guyanese businesses registering through the Local Content Secretariat during the first half of 2026.
This means hundreds more local businesses are entering the system and pursuing procurement opportunities linked to the petroleum sector.
According to the 2026 Mid-Year Report, preliminary estimates show that US $466.2 million was spent during the first six months of the year on goods and services in sectors prioritised for greater Guyanese participation.
For local entrepreneurs, these opportunities extend beyond the oil fields themselves.
The Local Content framework covers a range of services supplied by Guyanese businesses, creating openings across the wider economy as companies seek goods, workers and services required to support petroleum operations.
The increased registration comes as the Local Content Secretariat works to make certification more accessible to businesses.
An online registration portal was launched during the first half of 2026, allowing companies to submit applications digitally and reducing reliance on manual paperwork.
The Ministry of Natural Resources said the system was designed to improve processing efficiency and transparency.
Under the revised processing timelines, applications from wholly Guyanese-owned companies and business partnerships are expected to be processed within 15 working days, while renewals are expected within 10 working days. Other companies have a processing period of up to 21 working days for new applications and 15 working days for renewals.
The increased participation also comes as discussions continue on widening the areas in which Guyanese suppliers can participate.
The Mid-Year Report states that stakeholder consultations on revising the First Schedule of the Local Content Act identified 20 additional areas for consideration under goods and services.
The First Schedule establishes that contractors and subcontractors operating in the petroleum sector were required to meet specified levels of Guyanese employment and procurement.
Meanwhile, more than 40 companies operating in the petroleum sector received approval for their June 2026 annual local content plans.
Those plans set out commitments relating to procurement, employment and capacity development for Guyanese during the year.
