US pulls to pieces center aimed at countering ‘Russian influence’
(MENAFN) The United States is dismantling an intelligence office set up to combat alleged foreign interference, particularly from Russia, in American elections. The decision aligns with President Donald Trump’s drive to cut what he calls unnecessary spending and reduce partisanship within federal agencies.
On Wednesday, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard announced that the Foreign Malign Influence Center (FMIC), established in 2019, will be phased out, with its key responsibilities transferred to other agencies.
The FMIC was created after accusations of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, which Trump won. While Moscow has consistently denied involvement, Trump and Republicans argued the claims were politically motivated attempts by Democrats to undermine his presidency.
Gabbard argued the FMIC and similar entities had been misused by the previous administration to suppress dissent and censor political opponents. Since July, she has released documents she says reveal coordinated efforts by senior Obama-era officials to falsely accuse Trump of colluding with Russia.
She further asserted that the CIA produced a “fabricated” 2017 report suggesting Russian President Vladimir Putin favored Trump, which, she claims, led intelligence agencies to become “overly fixated” on US elections.
